My suggestion is to just use Firefox, it's free, amenable source, less buggy than IE, and really simple and unforced to use.

Buggy add-in probably, ensure you own the latest version of all software related to IE, and be paid sure you do a spyware/virus check
Highly likely is a bug or virus near your internet system files. If you are pissed off by it, you might as very well ask your friends for the installation directory of another broswer [firefox, opera, etc.] and use that one instead, ignore your original one.
Of course checking for a virus or spyware intruder is the first thing. Then, If it is IE6, shift to add/remove programs. There will be an entry for Internet Explorer, select it and a window open with 2 repair option. I don't suggest using the option that completely resets it to the resourceful configuration, just select repair.
If that doesn't do it, use prod and look for IE.INF. If there is more than one, look at the date and pick the oldest one, it is most likely the resourceful. Then select it, right click and select install.
What kind of tool do you own that repairs it?
fix spybot and nod32...forget everything
