On my internet explorer when you open it 1 it opens 51 more Internet explorers, what could be wrong?

Spyware or adware. These do this all the time. You need to run a set of spyware/adware removal tools. Run more then 1 as most don't catch everything.

you might have a virus, but more likely adware.
adware, or spyware, or malware (depends on who you talk to)
are programs that hijack your browser and send you to
their ad sites. They are not dangerous like a virus which
destroys data on your computer, but they are very very
annoying.
I suggest you get two programs, both are free for personal use.
"Adaware" is a program that will scan your computer for malware and delete it for you.
Then get "Spybot search and destroy" which does much of the same thing, but detects some things adaware doesn't.
With both programs running on you computer, you should be
fairly safe from malware
The other bonus of spybot it that it also install a program called tea timer. which will monitor your registry and let you know when ever a program tries to make changes to it.
And it gives you the option to allow the change or not to.
Unless you are installing a new program or updating you should not allow registry changes.

download mozilla firefox 1.5. It runs better than internet explorer and it less likely to become infected with adware or spyware
