Why has my internet connection started to send and receive data constantly, even when i've closed IE?

I've run anti-virus and anti-spam software and all checks out ok... i've no idea who to or where from it's sending/receiving data but it's constant.

if you have cable/dsl the modem constantly "talks" to your service provider.

also and 2 devices connected by an ethernet cable talk to eachother all the time, its usually called a ping.
yeah the router will constantly 'talk' to the internet (the DSLAM at your local exchange) to let it know that it is still there.
Are the lights on the modem indicating that data is currently flowing both ways all the time? Also are you using a wireless network? If so it could be that someone has hijacked your connection and is using it.

A cable modem Tx and Rx light will flash once every 10-15 seconds, it is like a keepalive message stopping the connection being torn down.
I would not worry about it unless you are getting a noticeable slow down while browsing. There will always be pings and whatnot getting sent to your comp from either your router or the internet, its no big deal...

If you want to check your ping times for consistency just click Start->Run then type in "cmd" and press enter, now type "ping www.google.com -t" (or any other reliable server) and that will continuously ping google and you can see the ping times in milliseconds. If they are all consistent and the same then no prob, but if they are all over the place and/or some time out, you have a problem.
Do you have a wireless DSL or broadband internet connection?

If you do and you don't use encryption and a secure password on your wireless router someone might be piggybacking your internet connection. People do it all the time.

You could have a trojan rootkit infection hiding various malware infections. Most scanners don't pick them up. They are difficult to detect and remove.

If you have a dial-up connection it could be that your computer is trying to download a very large update file. Some of the larger microsoft updates are 30-50mb. That would take ages over a modem connection.

Good luck!!
there are very trojans that anti viruses can not detect .
i think you have one of them .
because i am amateur hacker (ofcourse with white hat) I know this.for example I can give you a non executable file that your antiviruse say it is clean but actually it has a trojan when you connect to internet it will send me your files in my email.
If it's not wireless then you'll have to phone up where you bought the internet from, try their help centre
Broadband runs 24/7 you can't close it down unless you turn off the computer. Even if you disconect the internet it automatically turns it'self back on again...
