How do I get Internet Explorer to stop making me select a flash object or video, then click on what I want?

Until recently, my IE did not make me select a specific object on a webpage before I could manipulate it. For instance, if someone has a video, I have to put my mouse over the video (a gray frame appears around the video), then i click on the video to "select" it and then I must click play to make it play. This is also the case with many menus on webpages that utilize flash. Where is that setting and how do I turn it off? Why is it just showing up now?
